What is Insulin Resistance? Jan 2023
Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body's cells become less responsive to the hormone insulin, which is produced by the pancreas. Insulin plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels in the body by helping to move sugar from the blood into the cells where it can be used for energy.
When someone has insulin resistance, the cells become less sensitive to the insulin that is produced, which means that more insulin is needed to help move glucose into the cells. As a result, the pancreas may begin to produce more insulin in an attempt to keep blood sugar levels within a normal range.
Over time, the increased demand for insulin can lead to several health problems, including:
- High blood sugar levels
- Type 2 diabetes
- Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
- Hypertension
- High cholesterol and triglyceride levels
- Increased risk of heart disease
- Intense sugar & Carbohydrate cravings
Insulin resistance can be diagnosed through blood tests that measure fasting blood sugar levels and insulin levels.
Treatment for insulin resistance typically involves lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and losing weight if necessary.
