Understanding PCOS Symptoms, written by a Nurse with PCOS.



As a nurse living with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), I’ve spent years navigating the complexities of this condition—both personally and professionally. PCOS affects an estimated 1 in 10 women of reproductive age, yet it remains widely misunderstood. The exact cause of PCOS is unknown, but its symptoms can vary widely, making it difficult to diagnose. Understanding the signs and knowing when to seek help is crucial for managing this condition effectively.

 What is PCOS?

PCOS is a hormonal disorder that can affect women in various ways. It’s characterized by a combination of symptoms that can include irregular periods, excess androgen levels (male hormones), and polycystic ovaries. The name "Polycystic Ovary Syndrome" is a bit of a misnomer because not all women with PCOS have cysts on their ovaries, and cysts are not necessary for diagnosis.

The symptoms of PCOS are diverse and can manifest differently in each person. Some may experience mild symptoms, while others may struggle with more severe issues that affect their quality of life. I feel like I have very "severe" pcos and needed a solution. Understanding these symptoms is the first step towards getting the right treatment.

 Common Symptoms of PCOS

. Irregular Periods:**
One of the most common symptoms of PCOS is irregular or infrequent periods. This can manifest as having fewer than eight periods a year, or periods that are spaced out more than 35 days apart. Some women with PCOS may experience very heavy periods, while others may not have periods at all. Before PolyC's, my cycles were ONCE A YEAR!! Now, I have a cycyle monthly that is pain free & clot free :)

2. Excess Androgen:
Elevated levels of androgens (male hormones) can lead to various physical signs, such as:
- **Hirsutism:** This refers to excessive hair growth, particularly on the face, chest, back, or other areas where men typically grow hair. I called it my facial "peach fuzz"
- **Acne:** Persistent acne, particularly on the face, chest, and upper back, can be a sign of high androgen levels.
- **Male-pattern Baldness:** Thinning hair or hair loss on the scalp can also occur.

**3. Polycystic Ovaries:**
Polycystic ovaries are enlarged and contain multiple small follicles that may not be mature enough to trigger ovulation. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have ovarian cysts, but rather a string of undeveloped follicles.

**4. Weight Gain:**
Many women with PCOS experience weight gain or have difficulty losing weight. This is often related to insulin resistance, a common issue in women with PCOS, which makes it harder for the body to use insulin effectively.

**5. Difficulty Conceiving:**
PCOS is one of the leading causes of infertility in women. The hormonal imbalances can prevent ovulation, making it difficult to conceive. However, many women with PCOS do conceive, often with the help of fertility treatments or lifestyle changes.

**6. Mood Changes:**
Depression and anxiety are common among women with PCOS, though it’s not clear whether this is due to hormonal imbalances or the emotional toll of dealing with the symptoms.

My Personal Journey with PCOS

As a nurse, I’ve always been attuned to my body, yet I struggled with undiagnosed PCOS for years. My periods were irregular, I dealt with stubborn acne well into my 20s, and I noticed unwanted hair growth that made me feel self-conscious. But it wasn’t until I started trying to conceive that I realized something was amiss. After 5 years of negative pregnancy tests, I decided to seek a natural solution. I was trying PCOS supplements all over the world. 

When I was diagnosed with PCOS, I felt a mix of relief and frustration. Relief that there was finally an explanation for what I’d been experiencing, but frustration at the lack of clear answers. The exact cause of PCOS is still unknown, but it’s thought to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. What I did know was that I needed to take control of my health.

### When to See a Doctor

If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms I’ve mentioned, it’s important to see a doctor, especially if:
- **You’re Worried About Your Periods:** Irregular periods can be a sign of various health issues, including PCOS. If your periods are infrequent, very heavy, or you’re skipping them altogether, it’s worth getting checked out.
- **You’re Struggling to Conceive:** Difficulty getting pregnant can be a sign of PCOS, particularly if you have other symptoms like irregular periods or signs of high androgens.
- **You Have Signs of High Androgens:** If you notice increased facial or body hair, acne, or thinning hair on your scalp, these could be signs of elevated androgen levels, a hallmark of PCOS.
- **You’re Experiencing Significant Weight Changes:** Unexplained weight gain or difficulty losing weight, especially when accompanied by other symptoms, should prompt a visit to your doctor.

 Managing PCOS

Living with PCOS requires a multi-faceted approach. While there’s no cure, there are several ways to manage the symptoms and improve your quality of life. Here’s what has worked for me and many of my patients:

**1. Diet and Exercise:**
Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for managing PCOS. A balanced diet rich in whole foods, low in refined carbohydrates, and high in fiber can help manage insulin levels. Regular exercise can also improve insulin sensitivity, regulate periods, and help with weight management. Don't forget- the easiest and most effective form of exercise for PCOS is WALKING *

2. Medication:
There are various medications that can help manage PCOS symptoms:
- **Birth Control Pills:** These can regulate periods, reduce androgen levels, and help clear up acne. They are usually given first to "cover up" symptoms. 
- **Anti-androgens:** Medications like spironolactone can reduce excess hair growth and acne by blocking androgen effects.
- **Metformin:** This medication is often used to treat insulin resistance in women with PCOS and can help with weight loss and menstrual regularity.

 If you are unable to handle the side effects of Metformin, it's ok!! PolyC's Premium PCOS is the vitamin version of Metformin.
